The Cedar Project is a successful affordable housing project completed in 2024 in Downtown Riverside. The neighborhood is full of lovely older homes, from the early 1900s. The property in question, on Cedar Street, was an existing single family home that was run-down and a source of danger in the neighborhood, with break-ins, vandalism, and squatters. In partnership with the City of Riverside, utilizing HOME and CDBG funding, RHDC was able to acquire and fully renovate the single-family home into a modern 3-unit ADU conversion that visually matches the style of the surroundings, while increasing housing density and contributing to the beauty and tranquility of the neighborhood. The home’s layout was ideal for the design, with the main house converted to 2-units, with a main unit and an ADU, and the detached garage perfect for a separate ADU unit. The design of the ADU allows each of the 3 units their own private outdoor space.
Riverside Housing Development Corporation (RHDC) has worked with the City of Riverside for over 30 years now as a Community Housing Development Organization (CHDO) to increase the quality and quantity of affordable housing opportunities throughout Riverside. RHDC works with social workers and outreach groups, as well as other local government programs, to advertise our affordable housing vacancies, and to reach low-income households. The Cedar ADU project is a perfect example of the personal and individual value of every added unit of affordable housing, to provide opportunities for otherwise disadvantaged members of our community to likewise call this beautiful city home.
